HRTC member and Hampton Incubator Graduate RichardWood, president of SOLUS-Solutions and Technologies LLC and a leading expert on heavy truck aerodynamics, has been invited to discuss aerodynamic drag reduction technologies at the American Trucking Association (ATA) Fuel Strategies Workshop. Mr. Wood will be one of a select group of industry experts discussing fuel conservation strategies at the June 19th event to be held at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia. The ATA workshop comes as the trucking industry is experiencing the highest prolonged fuel prices in history. For some motor carriers, fuel has surpassed labor as the largest expense. The workshop is one element of an ATA strategy to address the nation’s fuel crisis. A second call for topics has been released for FY08 through the Small Business Innvative Research )SBIR) program. SBIR awards numerous Phase I grants of up to $100k each year to small busiensses. The intent of SBIR is to provide seed capital to fund innovation of technology that could be used by the military as well as having commercial merket potential.

During this prerelease period, which ends May 18, you may contact offerors directly (contact information is listed in each topic) to ask technical questions about specific topics. Once the DoD begins accepting proposals on May 19, 2008, no further direct contact between proposers and topic authors will be allowed (there are procedures in place for written - and open - Q&A). PTAC Joins the James City County Technology Incubator

The James City County Technology Incubator is proud to announce that the Hampton Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) has taken up space within its walls. The Virginia statewide PTAP at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy Mason Enterprise Center is a non-profit program funded by the Defense Logistics Agency, George Mason University. Co-located in the City of Fairfax, VA with the Northern Virginia Procurement Technical Assistance Center, the VA PTAP manages two additional satellite procurement centers in the Commonwealth. The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) announced that CIT GAP Funds is investing $100,000 in NexGenVS, LLC, a peer-topeer (P2P) data sharing company with a patented architecture. Wachovia Bank is ranked highest in customer satisfaction for primary mortgage loan originations in 2007, according to the 2007 Primary Mortgage Origination Study. In a report issued by J.D. Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer, P.C. (WEC) was the recipient of two Innovation Awards, sponsored by Practical Accountant. First, WEC was chosen for its low income housing tax credits (LIHTC) niche. WEC’s extensive experience in the real estate industry allowed them to develop a focused marketing plan and strong client relationships which enabled the niche to grow by 31.5 percent from the previous year. The Hampton Roads Technology Council (HRTC) completed its 9th Annual Tech Tee-Off Golf Tournament on Friday, September 28th. Taking place at the Cypress Point Country Club, the event was met with great weather and a turnout of 104 of the area’s top technologists and resource associates. Fun, barbeque, and some serious networking were enjoyed by all. In addition to the golf enjoyment, numerous awards were given out, including four Closest to the Pin awards and three Longest Drive awards. Additionally, HRTC handed out 16 certificates on the day (Four 1st Place First Flight, Four 1st Place Second Flight, Four 1st Place Third Flight, and Four 1st Place Fourth Flight). Finally, an award was bestowed on the team who pulled up the rear to finish in last place. HRTC forms Angel Investor Group

The first meeting of the Hampton Roads Angel Network was held Wednesday 25 July. HRTC members Joel Nied, Paul DiNardo and Gregory Stringfield have pulled together a group of local investors and created a forum to show case investment opportunites in local high-tech companies. The angel forum provides the opportunity for investor and entrepreneur to meet whether the venture is conceptual, start-up, pre-revenue or revenue producing. DoD Announces "Wearable Power" Prize Competition

The Director, Defense Research and Engineering, John Young announced a public prize competition to develop a wearable electric power system for war fighters. The competition will take place in the fall of 2008 and the prizes are $1 million for first place, $500,000 for second place and $250,000 for third place.

The essential electronic equipment that dismounted warfighters carries today - radios, night vision devices, global positioning system - runs on batteries. This competition will gather and test the good ideas for reducing the weight of the batteries that service members carry. The prize objective is a wearable, prototype system that can power a standard warfighter’s equipment for 96 hours but weighs less than half that of the current batteries carried. All components, including the power generator, electrical storage, control electronics, connectors and fuel must weigh four kilograms or less, including any attachments. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in a final competitive demonstration planned for the fall of 2008. At this “wear-off,” individuals or teams will demonstrate their prototype systems under realistic conditions. The top three competitors that demonstrate a complete, wearable system that produces 20 watts average power for 96 hours but weighs less than 4 kilograms (~8.8 lbs) will win the prizes.
