FLEXIBLE ROBOTIC HAND

The RAPHaEL robotic hand developed at Virginia Tech employs a compressor air tank and accordion-type tube actuator to combine firm gripping action and dexterity.

The Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech has developed a robotic hand that can firmly hold objects as heavy as a can of food or as delicate as a raw egg, while dexterous enough to gesture for sign language. Named RAPHaEL (Robotic Air Powered Hand with Elastic Ligaments), the fully articulated robotic hand is powered by a compressor air tank rated 60 psi and a novel accordion-type tube actuator. Microcontroller commands operate the movement to coordinate the motion of the fingers.

The hand derives its grip from the extent of pressure of the air. A low pressure is used for a lighter grip, while a higher pressure allows for a sturdier grip. The compliance of compressed air also aids in the grasping as the fingers can naturally follow the contour of the grasped object. "This air-powered design is what makes the hand unique, as it does not require the use of any motors or other actuators. The grasping force and compliance can be easily adjusted by simply changing the air pressure," said Dennis Hong, RoMeLa director and the faculty adviser on the project.

Hong added, "There would be great market potential for this hand, such as for robotic prosthetics."

FLESHY ROBOT HELPS AUTISTIC CHILDREN

University Of Hertfordshire researchers are helping to design a robot with skin and embedded tactile sensors to help autistic children.

Researchers at the University Of Hertfordshire School Of Computer Science in the United Kingdom are taking part in a European consortium to develop a robot with skin and embedded tactile sensors, in an effort to help children with autism. The researchers will work on Kaspar, a child-sized humanoid robot developed by the university's Adaptive Systems research group.

Kaspar will be covered with robotic skin and the scientists will develop new sensor technologies which can provide tactile feedback from areas of the robot's body. The goal is to make the robot able to respond to different styles of how the children play with it, in order to help the children develop socially appropriate playful interaction with the robot and other people.

"Children with autism have problems with touch, often with either touching or being touched," said Professor Kerstin Dautenhahn. "The idea is to put skin on the robot, as touch is a very important part of social development and communication. The tactile sensors will allow the robot to detect different types of touch, and it can then encourage or discourage different approaches."

Their applications include increasing machine speeds, applying constant tension to webs or wires, indexing a mechanism, holding a hinged object in position, controlling torque on capping or assembly operations, and providing soft starts or cushioned stops.

A continuous slip clutch can provide a surprisingly long life in a broad range of applications, and at a definite cost advantage when compared to alternative solutions. They are available with torque ranges from ounce/inches to more than 1000 lb/inches. Clutch capacity depends on torque, RPM, and duty cycle, all of which are interdependent. Reducing any of these factors will allow an increase in any other. The limiting factor is heat buildup.

MYMIC Announces Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program Phase I Award to Develop a Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation System

Portsmouth, VA - MYMIC LLC continues to expand its capabilities in the area of medical modeling and simulation applications. Partnered with Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School, MYMIC will develop, under an SBIR Phase I contract, from the US Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity, Fort Detrick, MD, a state-of-the-art, game-based clinical tool for the rehabilitation of patients suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) related deficits in cognitive and motor skills. They will develop a tool called The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Delivery System (BIRDS), to augment existing TBI rehabilitation programs by providing remote patient therapy. BIRDS will provide a more effective and standardized method of assessing a TBI patient’s rehabilitation progress. The BIRDS tool will also provide clinicians the ability to monitor and adjust patient therapy remotely thereby optimizing office time with the patient. BIRDS will be designed for both the XBOX360 or Microsoft Zune game consoles leveraging commercially available game technology to deliver a cost-effective, easily distributed solution.
