Defense and Homeland Security Consortium Goals-Marketing Pentagon South

Pentagon South

D. Major Goal: Raise the national and international awareness of the defense and homeland security businesses and market the area as "Pentagon South":

D1. Sub Goal: Assist the DEDs in marketing the concept of "Pentagon South".

Short title: Market Hampton Roads companies outside the region

Background and Objective of Goal:
Hampton Roads, Virginia MSA is the nerve center for a substantial combination of federal activities and military command organizations, both logistical and operational. The flourishing commercial, industrial base provides direct support to these activities and commands and to other organizations world-wide. Hampton Roads possesses a networking environment ripe for future business opportunities, supported by several innovative regional organizations. Hampton Roads is recognized nationally and internationally for the region's defense and homeland security businesses, south of the Pentagon, a concentration second only to the Washington DC metropolitan area. Hampton Roads is also home to a significant shipbuilding and repair capability and to vast capabilities in IT, systems integration, engineering and technical solutions, training and a wide variety of other high technology services and products, including robotics and modeling and simulation. Hampton Roads businesses are also a major source of systems integration, analysis, innovation, solutions and services across multiple disciplines. For sustainable economic success, we must leverage these strengths outside Hampton Roads.

    • An excellent interview was conducted on WHRV’s HearSay program on 3/5/08. The program is available from the following: http://www.hrtc.org/DHSC/Press/
    • The Website is updated regularly. A resource page has been added. Please suggest changes to Missy. Member companies are requested to link back to www.PentagonSouth.org from their own websites.
  • 2/11/08
    • Reviewed the changes to the Web site.
    • Added a resources center location. How will the Web site be maintained? Should have more than one person responsible for maintenance of the site. Do we want promotional presentations on the site? Let Missy do as much as possible. Available for technical content for city DEDs; are we meeting their needs?
    • Terminology used - cities are “sponsors”, the companies are “participants”, and individuals are volunteers.
  • 11/19/07
    • Handout
    • Evaluate use of the term “Pentagon South”
    • Identify intended message and target audience?
    • Are we supporting the economic development offices?
    • HREDA should be part of the DHSC – Sam Workman will follow-up with Jones Hooks
